Luke Turnbull started playing tennis at just 3 years old, as soon as he could hold a racquet! His mum Grace played tennis and was happy to get Luke involved as soon as he showed an interest. He soon became passionate about Tennis and at age 8 he got involved in competitions.
Winning became a real driver for Luke when other aspects in his life were not so easy. On court he was assertive, competitive, fully focused and confident. Tennis gave him success and a sense of worth. Luke also enjoyed being a spectator and loved the atmosphere of being at the Davis cup in Glasgow. He was also lucky enough to get tickets from the Tennis Foundation to go to the Wimbledon Championships which motivated him even more.
At junior level Luke achieved top 5 in Scotland Under 12’s and top 10 in Under 14’s. Luke became involved in Learning Disability tennis at age 13 and won the National Championships in his first year of competing at age 14. He was later selected for the GB squad and represented GB in Paris in his first international. He managed to gain Doubles bronze at the World Championships and Silver in the European Championships Doubles and team event at age 15.
Luke is now training hard to be selected for the next World Championships and to improve his World ranking. As a member of the LTA’s GB LD performance squad, he gets to train at the National Tennis Centre in London which is a fantastic opportunity to feel part of an elite squad.
Luke has also recently passed his level 1 tennis coaching course and is enjoying his new role as an assistant coach. Luke is passionate about telling others about the opportunities in LD tennis.
