Tribute to John Tucker

It is with great sadness that the Trust has learned of the passing of John Tucker.

John’s long association with tennis was extraordinary from building his own tennis centre, Clearview in Brentwood, to his involvement at the LTA and a supporter of the Dan Maskell Tennis Trust since its inception in 1997, becoming a Trustee and Vice-Chairman when the charity became independent in 2010.

John was well-known in all walks of life including mixing with top sportsmen and celebrities. It was John who introduced Elaine Paige to the Trust and championed her taking over as President when John Barrett retired from the role. He also worked with our Chairman, Sue Wolstenholme from when she first became a Councillor for Herts Lawn Tennis Association and subsequently invited her to be part of the LTA’s Development, Coaching and Schools Committee of which he was Chairman.

For the Dan Maskell Tennis Trust his pivotal achievement was the introduction of its major fundraising event – the Celebrity Golf Challenge which is still going strong to this day after 25 years. John negotiated its first home at the magnificent Wentworth Club and was largely responsible for the participants through his wide range of contacts and celebrities such as Steve Davis, Geoff Hurst, Barry Hearn and Dave “Boy” Green to name but a few. John would meet random people and immediately ask if they played golf and if they did, he very quickly invited them to play!

A great “larger than life” character who was always cheerful and will be much missed by those who had the pleasure of knowing him. Thank you John.
